The Cal Poly Symphony will perform the final compositions of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Richard Strauss and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, in the Performing Arts Center. There is a certain mystique surrounding a composer’s last work, and some pieces are known precisely because of this special place in their creator’s life. The group will perform the first movement from Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances,” the composer’s last major work, which was completed in 1940, three years before his death. Amy Goymerac, soprano, will be featured on Strauss’ “Im Abendrot” (“At Sunset”), the last of his “Four Last Songs” which he did not live to see premiered. Tchaikovsky conducted the premiere of his last symphony, Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, nine days before he died of cholera. Cal Poly Symphony Director David Arrivée will conduct the concert. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office, 805-756-4849. Read more on the Music Department’s website.
