The Cal Poly Symphony will team up with the University Jazz Band for the first time at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in the Performing Arts Center. The program will explore the intersection of symphonic and jazz traditions: Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Waltz No. 2” from “Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2”; “Cinco Salsa,” a salsa version of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 arranged by Sverre Indris Joner; Antônio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave,” a bossa nova for jazz band, flutes and strings; Claude Debussy’s “Arabesque” as arranged by Jack Matthias and recorded by Harry James; Bert Ligon’s “Bookends”; Duke Ellington’s “Three Black Kings” with Ana Nelson, tenor saxophone soloist; “A Walk to Remember” by University Jazz Band Director Jamaal Baptiste; and George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” which was used in the same-titled 1951 film for a dance sequence featuring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The symphony is directed by David Arrivée. More information is on the Music Department’s calendar website. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office, ext. 6-4849.
