As the world steps into the light and attempts to return to normal, there’s little doubt that the pre-2020 definition of normal has become outdated and in need of revision. Two years after COVID-19 crashed like giant wave, the white water left behind is a postpandemic swirl of divisive politics, economic uncertainty, rising inflation, $6 per gallon gasoline with a Russian war on Ukraine riding the horizon like ominous storm clouds. The TEDx SLO 2022 theme — Transcending the Norm — hopes to create bonds that tie us all together through engaging and thought-provoking talks and “ideas worth spreading” that will challenge and encourage further thinking. The Cal Poly student-organized Tedx SLO will take place Friday, April 15, at the Performing Arts Center’s Harold Miossi Hall. Doors open at 3:40 p.m; the program is from 4-8 p.m. Two 90-minute sessions will follow with an hourlong intermission. Buy tickets here. Organizers’ vision for this year’s theme arose out of the desire to advocate for ideas that stretch beyond modern conventions. By highlighting the voices of individuals who have contributed to new methods of understanding, we are empowering our community through tools that will help us re-structure the current standard of normal. They look forward to seeing you on April 15 to help transcend the norm.
