The Center for Coastal Marine Sciences is hosting an open house at the Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. It’s great for kids of all ages! Interact with marine creatures in touch tanks, view tiny marine species through microscopes, and learn about whale migrations. Learn about the scientific studies being conducted by the center’s researchers and students on protecting the local ocean ecosystems, sustaining fisheries, mapping currents and more. Bring your camera for photos of sea creatures and the incredible views of San Luis Bay! Be aware that the pier has steel grating and is a 1.2 mile round trip. You’ll need to wear closed-toe walking shoes. Flip-flops or heels are prohibited. You’re encouraged to bring your own water bottle. No pets — only ADA service dogs will be permitted on the pier.
